‘New Parks Centre Library’ – Millree Hughes and Paul Conneally 2016

Video showing the window installation of a kerb and tyre mark from Involuntary Painting 1 New Parks : New York in the New Parks Centre Library in Leicester, UK. Involuntary Painting 1 New Parks : New York was conceived by artists Millree Hughes (New York USA) and Paul Conneally (Loughborough UK) with Conneally working over a number of weeks and months with people from the New Parks Community facilitated by Soft Touch Arts, Leicester City Council and Arts Council England.

Hughes inputted to the group via a dedicated Facebook group and videos which the artists see as part of the work, along with involuntary paintings and support from artists in New York (including Brad Melamed, Andrea Evans, Lucien Samaha, Judy Rhee, Michael Lee Nirenberg, Kevin Bright, Richmond Burton and others and in Florida, Jane Hart.

This tyre mark was identified as an ‘involuntary painting’ and photographed by local man Colin Murphy with Conneally. It was located along the lefthand side of St Oswald’s Road straight opposite the library. It now forms part of the library itself being applied to the front windows of the library on February 2nd 2016 by Conneally and Sally Norman from Soft Touch Arts.

Other involuntary paintings identified and photographed in the area by members of the Creative New Parks community have also been integrated into the fabric of the New Parks Centre Library with Hughes and Conneally asserting that the area around and the Library itself are part of the work as opposed to being just the location at which these works were made and can be encountered, be viewed.

Members of the Involuntary Painting 1 New Parks : New York group in New Parks include: Sally Girling, Mandy Pegg, Carl Tincknell, Bertie, Lauren Ann Park, Claire Webb, Tracey Inchley, Colin Murphy, Sally Norman, Hannah Maxwell and Mandy Warren along with others.
